Dan Atkinson excels in assisting professionals, businesses, churches, and non-profits with litigation and other legal challenges. He is licensed to practice law in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, and his general litigation practice includes professional liability defense, construction litigation, personal injury defense, insurance litigation, aviation law, business torts, and education law. Dan has experience with jury trials, non-jury trials, and arbitration in various forums, and litigates in both federal and state court. Additionally, he defends licensed professionals facing potential sanctions before administrative agencies, and advises school districts on administrative matters, including athletic eligibility issues and teacher employment issues. He also works with various construction contractors, FAA repair stations, suppliers and other entities to protect those businesses’ interests in performing work for customers, including assertion of lien and mortgage rights against real property and aircraft.

 

Dan enjoys educating professional groups about legal issues confronting various professions. He has made multiple presentations to professional organizations serving coaches, athletic trainers, engineers, and insurance claims professionals. He also is a member of the Construction Law Sections of the South Carolina Bar and the North Carolina Bar Association, the S.C. Defense Trial Attorneys Association, where he serves on the Board of Directors, the Defense Research Institute, and the Aviation Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia.

 

A native of Laurens, South Carolina, Dan is a second-generation Furman graduate. He currently volunteers as legal counsel to the Medical Committee for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas All-Star Football Game. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Chair of the Daniel Morgan District, and he has been honored with the BSA’s Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to Scouting.  Dan also serves as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 22 in Spartanburg.

 

Dan resides with his wife, Amanda, and their three children in Spartanburg, and is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he serves as Lay Leader. Dan also serves as a Certified Lay Servant for the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and he has served as Volunteer Coordinator/Chaplain for the Upstate Camp for the Salkehatchie Summer Service Program. Dan is a graduate of Upstate Class XV of the Diversity Leaders Initiative at the Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics, Public Leadership, as well as Class 37 of Leadership Spartanburg.  He serves on the Advisory Board for the School of Law and Public Services for the Early College and Career Center at Dorman High School.
